King Kalakaua and Queen Kapi'olani lived in the Palace from the time of its completion in 1882 until his death in 1891.  His successor, Queen Lili'uokalani, lived in the Palace until the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893.During the monarchy period, the Palace was the center of social and political activity in the Kingdom of Hawai`i.
